Full Description

"Pottery", Samian sherd found circa 1946.
"During draining operations on this field by James Crosby & Sidney Gooch of Honington circa 1946, pottery was found - some Med. BB 29/12/50 - Very black soil can be seen" (S1).
Fieldwalking produced wide pottery scatter on this field and extending to NW. Samian ware including decorated sherd, very little colour coated and shell gritted - mainly C2-C3 group probably. A few pieces of roof and box tile. At TL 9187 7207A there is a wet area with a probable spring; the samian sherds and tile fragments were found to the NW of this. This area adjoins IXT 010 to the NE (S2).

Finds from area in field to north (area centred TL92047224) include samian, amphora, grey wares (and flint scraper). Main area includes a couple of brick/tile fragments, samian, Colchester colour coat, grey wares (and a piece of lave quern, probably of later date). In the field to the NW (area centred TL91917225) an Oxford ware sherd extends the dating into the 4th century (also worked flints and flint gritted pottery in the same group). All held at SCC.
