Full Description

'Drawings of some Saxon weapons, with a boss of a shield found at Bardwell.... now in possession of Mr Warren' (S2)(S4). OS puts this at (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) (R3).
Although the OS puts the Anglo Saxon burial,(see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) there is no evidence that this is correct and possibly the location became confused because Warren's name is connected with it. Basil Brown notes "Mr Rainbird Clarke has also kindly traced the following reference for me at the Birmingham Library J of Brit Archaeol Assoc, 4, 1849, 71-72 'Mr Kent of Stanton, Suffolk, forwarded sketches of Anglo Saxon weapons in iron found some time since on an eminence in N part (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) deposited by the side of a skeleton together with the boss of a shield (SNT Misc Sax). Mr Kent also supplied the following notes to other discoveries in the vicinity of Stanton : In the adjoining village of Bardwell a good many skeletons have been discovered in the last 40 years. I saw the boss of a shield that was found 3 years since (circa 1845) and it had a projection in the convex centre which I considered to be gold. I think someone in Diss has got it now. About quarter mile from this place a good many fragments of Rom pottery has been found and some coins also. The pottery was almost all broken, I saw some fragments the other day, those of a very large bowl made of white earth and the man who found it has also got some coins for me to examine when I have time'" (S1).
Formerly recorded as BAR MISC.
