Full Description

c.1865-c.1910: Numerous hand-axes and one Levallois flake from gravel pits. First hand-axe found by Henry Prigg in 1865, many hundreds found within a few years and continued discoveries up until circa 1910. "They include numerous elegant specimens in fresh condition and justify Evans (S2) statement that some of them afforded 'the finest instances of the skill of the Palaeolithic period which have been found in Britain, or indeed elsewhere'" (S1). Evans states that mammalian remains are scarce (S1,S2). For more detailed discussion and typology see (S1). For museum locations of finds see (S5)

1994: Initial section through South West side of pit. Summary in (S3, S4). Further excavations proposed.

2017: Investigations by Durham University, sections in Whites pit and the copse to the West, (S12).

2018: Investigations by Durham University, Section on third terrace of river Ouse on forestry path to the East. Report forthcoming.

Levallois flake dubious, (S12).

Ther is also a Terminal Upper Palaeolithic Long Blade Core From Little Lodge Farm (no further details) in Ipswich Museum, (S14, S15)

1868: Flat Butted cordate or "Bout Coupe" handaxe found. There is disaggreement over exact provenance, (S16).
