Full Description

IA 'weaving' comb, total length 145mms, 43mms wide at teeth, narrowing to 11mms immediately below peaked triangular head. This head is 2.0cms wide, 2. 2cms long with straight sided central perforation 7mm wide, 4mm deep. Eleven pointed teeth up to 1.8cms long, some with signs of notches/grooves on reverse side - possibly remains of original cut marks or use marks? Face side off white and polished, reverse pale-medium brown with only edges, triangular head and part teeth polished. Good condition apart from slight cracking and modern repair to reverse side.
Found at Hiss Farm 'on land producing IA pottery when earth was being moved following filling in of part of existing Little Ouse when New Cut was passing in the vicinity' (S1).
In July 1979 (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) (who presented the comb to Mildenhall Museum in 1985) phoned and mentioned the comb saying it came from near the New Cut. He had previously shown it to A R Edwardson in Moyses Hall Museum and the Reverend Munday at Eriswell (S2) so it was probably found about 1964-1965 (the New Cut was made in 1964).
Given find spot only approximate although IA sherds are also recorded to S at BRD 010 and to E at BRD 032 and a bronze ring-headed pin just to N of Little Ouse (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) (in Norfolk) (S3).
Another IA 'weaving' comb is known from Lakenheath (LKH 014).
