Sold by R(see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) September 1969:- Lot 13. A small bronze flat bronze axe "Found at Breemswell, Suffolk, 1872. A.8" ... Length 3 3/8 inches. Crescentic shaped blade. UKP 12.
Sold to : (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s), an "enthusiastic collector" (S1).
In April 1982 an EBA "palstave" was offered for sale in 'Popular Archaeology' (with the description "item number 30 ... bronze flat axe 85mm cleaned labelled Breemswell Suffolk 1872. This is most likely to be an error in reading Bromeswell which is near Woodbridge), by the renowned dealers Fox and Company ... Further information forwarded with the objects showed that they were ex Robert Clough Antiquities ...
A reply to correspondence received from the County Archaeological Officer confirmed above ... being originally acquired by (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) from Sothebys (for date see below). The Bromeswell axe is a typical example of an EBA flat axe of around 2000- 1300 BC being of waisted shape with a square butt and crescented blade, having been cleaned with an abrasive prior to its being marked in white ink, Breemswell Suffolk 1872 A8, which is varnished over. The axe displays several scratches/marks some of which may be ard or file marks (or both). Along its edges it retains a black bronze appearance. The dimensions are length 8.5cm width across butt 2.5cm, width across blade 5.2cm" (S2) (sic). Has always been associated with MBA palstave see BML Misc BA (CRN 00795). Sold at Sothebys 16 July 1968 (S3).
