Full Description

Two C17 tokens found on large Rom site at Gardenhouse Field and Pound Field excavated by Basil Brown in 1946. One found on Gardenhouse circa (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) in November 1965, token marked "SAMUEL FITCH IN RICKINGHALL 1665" (S1)(S3). Previously recorded in HER under RKS 002. The second was found on Pound Field circa (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s), token marked "BENJAMIN WHYT, IN HOXSON GROCER BW" (S2)(S3)(S4).
1979: Building application approved at TM 0460 7526, c.100m SE of marked site area. Site visited 12 May 1980, foundations already completed and soil removed. Subsoil boulder clay. No finds noted (S5).
1985: Building application in outline approved.
198600608: During initial earth moving on development PMed coins and tokens and a harness pendant (?date) with inlay in white metal (?butterfly design) found metal detecting by (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) (S6).
19860620: Metal detected etc. finds by (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) from field under development include miscellaneous PMed (S7).
19860624: Substantial PMed, disturbed area noted at W end of field prior to development (S8).
198609: Further metal detected finds include PMed bronze and pewter buttons, a Nuremberg type bronze token, very worn and pierced and undated bronze studs (S9).
