Full Description
Following discovery of fresh charcoal mixed with a burnt flint patch during fieldwalking by Colin Pendleton, a 2m x 1m NW-SE trench was excavated. Environmental samples taken by P Murphy revealed a soft calcareous tufa overlying river gravel indicative of a continuous sere from an open freshwater environment to woodland. Overlying this was a layer, surviving to 5cm thickness, of heat shattered flint and charcoal (ash, oak, hazel/alder) radiocarbon dated to 3650 +/- 100 bp or 1700 bc (HAR 2690)[calibrated to 2140-1935 BC]. This was interpreted as a BA woodland clearance horizon of unknown extent. The charcoal layer was covered by humified peat disturbed by ploughing, reflecting a subsequent return to wetter conditions (S1)(R1).
For other excavated & radiocarbon dated burnt flint patches in Mildenhall parish, see MNL 124 and MNL 204.
