Full Description
Coin hoard of silver denarii found scattered over circa 80 yards in ploughsoil; area intensively searched by finders (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) and rechecked after ploughing.
24.9.1979: Reported to Mildenhall police and investigated by Det Con J Handford.
25.9.1979: Coins seen by SAU (JP).
28.9.1979: Site visited, field rolled and set. No visible Rom debris in finds area. Farmer suggested that coins had been redeposited after levelling of sandhills into a low peaty area in circa 1964-1965; mixed sandy soil visible with sand ridge on N side. Finders state that coin distribution extended up to sand ridge. Field has been under grass for much of the time since 1965ish. Coins examined by G Pollard, Fitzwilliam Museum. Total 258 denarii. 114 Republican, many worn, includes 36 Anthony and one Brutus EID MAR (rare). Remainder imperial, mainly post Neronian with 88 Vespasian (good condition) and 5 Domitian (AD 73-96). Suggestion that hoard may relate to troop movements to Germany and could represent an officer's personal savings. 22.11.1979: Inquest held - found Treasure Trove with joint finders (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) (S1).
7.10.1980: one of finders (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) reports finding of a further 19 silver denarii on site. Twelve Republican, worn, including 5 Mark Anthony, two end C2/ beginning C1 BC, four probably C1 BC, one C2 BC. Imperial coins, one Augustus (27 BC - AD 14), one Galba (AD 68-69), one Vitellius (AD 69), three Vespasian (AD 69, AD 76, AD 77) and one Domitian (AD 79).
9.10.1980: Coroner informed - no inquest deemed necessary (S2). Spread of coins extends into MNL 097, on sand ridge, where Rom spread on surface and features and building remains excavated in 1964-1965. Coins from MNL 097 range from Claudius I to Allectus (S1).
