Full Description

IA pottery scatters in field adjoining SE corner of Big Mount Field, consisting of `15 hearths' in SE corner of Big Mount Field (BUT 004) & field to SE, yielding a few scraps of `A' pottery. For full details of hearths, see (S2).
Also clay lined trench excavated by Basil Brown in 1949. The trench appeared to be tile lined at first but they were of irregular size and fired brick- red. It measured 3 feet x 1 foot x 10 inches deep and filled with black earth. In fill was found a handbrick of fine clay with no grit, mixed with chaff. Both Basil Brown and Stanley West thought this to be a possible salt pan. Pottery IA "A" scatters occurred at TM 3764 5067 and TM 3763 5061 and the trench was at TM 3762 5067 (S1)(S2).
For second possible salt making site and briquetage, see BUT 014.
