Full Description

Gold `A' bracteate: repousse design of helmeted head, she wolf suckling two children, two stars, two dot-in-circle motifs and a runic text contained within a border of triangles and a rim of beaded wire type. The suspension loop is of the broad, central rounded ridge type with a double spiral of plain wire on the face. Plain back. Weight 2.24gms. Diameter 2. 3cms (S1)(S2).
Comments: Hines (1989)(no 1989 correspondence in file!) & Oden Stedt (S6)(R1) suggest the bracteate originates from southern Scandanavia or more probably Scheleswig Holstein, circa 475, although also argued as an 'English text' (S6)(R2). The runic inscription (ga go ga . maga . medu) interpreted by Oden Stedt (Hines 1987) as '(This is) a she-wolf. Reward to a relative (? kinswoman)' (S3)(S4)(S5).
