Full Description

An area adjacent to a disused pit was stripped of topsoil for further extraction of sand and gravel and revealed features of Rom and Sax date, which were excavated. One two-post sunken featured bulding and possibly part of a second (destoyed by old extraction pit). Fill contained pottery sherds, animal bone and lead objects (?weights). Close to the building was a grave, surrounded by a small ditch (maximum diameter 5 metres) with an opening to the E. The only surviving evidence for the inhumation within the grave was a coffin stain and there were no grave goods. Elsewhere in the excavated area a narrow linear feature contained sherds of MSax Ipswich ware (S1). Material was previously reported from Gallows Hill (HCH Misc Sax) to ?Ipswich Museum. A glass vessel base (?Rom) labelled Gallows Hill Easton, probably also came from here (S2). Possible site of Wicklow, meeting place of liberty of Ely from c.870 (or earlier)(S3). See Misc (sf16999) for details.
The site overlooks the main part of the large Rom settlement (HCH 001) from which a small amount of ESax pottery is recorded.
See also Rom.
