Full Description
Hoard of bronze vessels found during building development. Consisted of large bronze cauldron with iron handles, containing wine strainer, inscribed skillet and situla fittings & remains of wood, all dating to circa AD 50-60? Found by S Rutherford, Lakenheath (S1)(S2)(S3).
March 1992: Discussions with building trade worker (now employed by Haymills, formerly with Bennetts) who was working on this site during building works, made it clear that large amounts of material were being discovered all over the site. He mentioned how it had been exciting working on the site because it was not known what may turn up in the ground works. Nonetheless the site was spec. built and topsoil was left in situ when possible, therefore, site probably not over extensively damaged. Now gardens where not built on (S4).
May 1993: Flower borders `fieldwalked' over whole estate & further estate to E. Only finds prehistoric & PMed flint work, absolutely no LIA or Rom finds - suggest account of building worker do not relate to LIA or Rom finds. Hoard appears to be from isolated findspot (S5).
Suggested as possible burial associations (S6).
