Full Description

Circular moat (Medieval?) named The Mardle. Said to have been water filled, with the water getting `very low during the hot summer, but does not dry up entirely' in 1926 (S1). `The central island at the Mardle is fairly hard ground. The present tenant remembers a few bricks being found there some years ago, but there was nothing like the foundations of any building... The bottom of the moat is also fairly hard. The two breaks in the circle of water still exist... one to the N-E and the other slightly to the E of S' (S1). `I understand from the locals that the moat was filled in some years ago and the site is very overgrown' (S2).
Part of a second parallel ditch is shown to the N on the 1:2500 1927 map. Other maps not checked.
1997: Site evaluated - shown to have been mostly destroyed, probably by gravel extraction between 1927 and the 1960s & infilled during the 1960s. Details in (S3).

June 2014. Lothingland, Lowestoft and North Suffolk Coast and Heaths National Mapping Programme.
The possible medieval circular moat described above is partially visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs (S4), centred at TM 5112 8973. On these photographs the site is partially obscured by trees, but the mapping of the portion that is visible accords with its depiction on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition map (S5).
