Monument record BAY 047 - Cropmarks of a Bronze Age barrow cemetery

Cropmarks of 7 Bronze Age round barrows, forming a barrow cemetery, of varying sizes, covering an area 300m by 140m. The main barrows are distributed in a linear pattern, ranging in diameter from 20-28m, with one being a double concentric ring, with evidence for a central pit, the other barrows have no visible entrances or internal features. The barrow at the northern end of the group as two further smaller satellite barrows (6 and 12m in diameter), located within 9m. A large ciruclar enclosure 84m in diameter is also closely assocaited. This enclosure has been bisected by the railway. While this enclosure is thought to be too large for a barrow, it may be of comparable date. Several linear ditches are also visible running between the barrows, only one cuts through the large circular enclosure. This barrow cemetery is made up of 5 individual sites (BAY 003, 007, 008, 017, 019). Helen Saunders (Essex County Council) February 2014. S1-S4
