Full Description

Large ring ditch, ? circular enclosure.
Excavated 1980: 48m diameter, 7m wide and 2.24m deep. Samples for radiocarbon dating taken from bottom of ditch. Thin scatter of pottery, but no burials identified. Pottery mainly thinnish burnt flint gritted with red exteriors and black cores plus one small sherd with coarse comb-stamped decoration - ?beaker. Details in (S3).
Radiocarbon date of 1260+/-70bp (HAR-4631) from layer 0104 in upper fill of ditch associated with oak charcoal, charred stone & hazelnut shell fragments.

Cropmarks of a large circular enclosure, excavated 1980, of Saxon date. The cropmark appears to be 46m in diameter with no visible internal features or entrances. Helen Saunders (Essex County Council). December 2014. (S5-S7)
