Monument record TAT 002 - Tattingstone Hall

Rectangular moat with outer yard and fish pond. Occupied by Tattingstone Hall before demolition and flooding for the Alton reservoir. The Hall (see PMed) dated to C16-C19. The moat island had been raised and levelled with crag sands before construction work, and a single Med potsherd (?C13-C14) from below the crag suggests the moat may be medieval, there was, however, no signs of a pre C16 building within the limited area of the excavation (S1).

Earthworks of a complete rectangular moat, with extensive large fish ponds to the south, of medieval date. The moat appeared to be mostly dry with a house built on the platform. The enclosure measures 78m by 60m with no breaks in the ditch, access to the house was via a bridge. The fishponds to the south were large (upto 220m across) but were no longer water filled at the time of the photography. The house was demolished and the moat and fishponds destroyed by the creation of Alton Water, however, photography taken during the construction of the reservoir shows the ponds and moat following the removal of tree cover.
