Full Description

A probable Post Medieval field boundary with possible earlier origins is visible as cropmarks of ditches on aerial photographs, centred on TM 20094105 to the north of Robert's Grove, Ipswich. The cropmarks consist of two linear ditches, orientated north-south, that at first run parallel and then diverge continuing at either side of a wetter area of ground. (S1, S2) A Post Medieval field boundary is marked in this area on the Ipswich, Nacton and Levington map of 1768-1770 (S3), as is the 19th century parish boundary (S4), and this could certainly account for some of the cropmark features although the distinctive kink visible in the field boundary is not visible in the linear ditches. It may be that the feature has earlier, perhaps Prehistoric or Roman, origins as a trackway. (S5)
