Full Description

World War II anti-invasion defences are visible as structures and earthworks on aerial photographs surrounding Ipswich/Nacton airfield, centred on TM 19244126. The defences consist of stretches of barbed wire obstruction which run around the southern side of the airfield from TM 18704144 to TM 19984132. The defences continue around to the northern side of the airfield but these have not been plotted as they fall well outside the project area. Within the barbed wire a number of hexagonal pillboxes are located, at TM 18884137, TM 19284101, TM 19664118 and TM 19664118. The latter pillbox is surrounded by a complex system of slit trenches similar to those a little further south at TM 18694093, where it appears that the central pillbox may have been destroyed. Numerous other trenches and gun pits are located around the edges of the airfield as are a number of nissen huts and buildings of unknown function. The photographs show that the Post Medieval field boundaries have been painted back on to the airfield as camouflage and at the south-western corner of the airfield, centred on TM 18814085, four groups of long rectangular structures have also been camouflaged with paint, (S1-S4).
