Full Description

Seal impression of seal found (metal detecting?) by (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s):- pointed oval shape, central device of a bird wounding itself in the chest above a nest containing three chicks. Surrounding inscription reads: +SVM PELLICANVS DEI, `I am the pelican of God'. The device & inscription refer to the legend of the pelican feeding its young on its own blood, this being taken as a parallel for Christ's sacrifice for humanity, thus `the pelican of God' is Christ. Probably C14 (S1).
For further seals from (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) area see WCB 031 & WCB 032.

Formerly recorded as WCB MISC
