Full Description

Site of Sudbourne Hall andpark as shown on OS map of 1880s. In approximately same position as Chapmans or Sudburn House as shown on Norden's map of circa 1600 as H or courtyard plan building. This great house burned down and was rebuilt by James Wyatt in circa 1784 and much enlarged for Sir Richard Wallace. Demolished [1953]. A landscape park was built around the house presumably around circa 1800 [but see below] (S1)(S2)(R1).
Hall & park shown on Hodskinson's 1784 map (S3). Park survey to follow (R2).
Original Hall built for Sir Michael Stanhope (d.1621), Groom of the Chamber to Queen Elizabeth and to James I.
See details in Lost Country Houses of Suffolk by WM Roberts.

December 2015. Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme.
The cropmarks and earthworks of former boundaries and tracks are visible on aerial photographs at two locations within Sudbourne Park: TM 4176 5170 (S5)-(S6), and TM 4139 5097 (S7)-(S11). They probably relate to the development of the park, or to pre-existing features enclosed within it when it was created or expanded. Those at TM 4139 5097, on the eastern edge of the park, may in part relate to roads shown outside the park on Hodskinson’s 1783 Map of Suffolk (S3). Some elements were still evident as earthworks in the 1940s, but all now appear to have been levelled.
