Full Description
Silver penny of Beornwulf of Mercia, AD 823-825. Re-used as coin-brooch, reverse with cross is gilded & obverse had solder attachments for pin and catchplate when found (visible on pre-cleaning photos). Coin: obverse bust right; reverse cross crosslet in centre, moneyer EACGA, 2 pellets in each quarter. Weight, pre-cleaning 1.42g, after cleaning 1.38g. Six coins of this moneyer are known, only other with a provinance is from Lower Brook Street, Ipswich. Suggests moneyer may have been operating in E Anglia which was under Mercian control up to AD 827 (S1)(R1). Metal detected (?) by (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s).
Also bronze spearhead tip fragment found metal detecting in Sept 2003. S3
