Full Description

Farmstead buildings of Dagworth Hall. In the mid C19 Dagworth Hall was the main place where hops were grown in Suffolk (S1). James Jannings recorded as hopgrower and farmer 1844 & 1846 (S2), Thomas Woodward in 1855 (S3). OS 6 inch map of 1902 shows a large complex of buildings at the Hall, most of which were probably associated with the hop industry. The principal survivors of this complex are:
a) Hop kiln at TM 0418 6152. Large clay lump building with two rounded end, 2 storeyed tarred walls and a slated roof. Attached to the west side is a timber `gallery' at first floor level, on an open base. This once contained 2 kilns for roasting hops (S4). Re-erected in 1846 after being moved across the ford (S5).
b) Horse engine house at TM 0416 6156. Octagonal brick and flint structure with a slated roof. The upper part of the wall has a chequer pattern of ventilation holes executed in brick. The internal machinery has now gone, but the arched hole for the drive shaft, now blocked, is still visible. In 1902 this house was attached to a long range on its east side, now demolished.
c) Clay lump farm wall at TM 0417 6155. Tarred sides and felted top. d) Barn at TM 0419 6158. Large timber-framed structure with a modern roof. Part clay lump open-sided cart shed attached at the east end. Brick cattle sheds attached to the south with brick and flint yard wall.
