Full Description

Circa 1960: Evidence for clay pipe making, including clay pipe mould fragments, found in topsoil while gardening in garden in `The Harbourage' (S1).
Probably same site as clay pipe manufacturing site in Beccles suggested by 1851 census of David C Copeman clay pipe tobacco worker of Beccles, Peddars Lane (S2). Also directories showing John and William Copeman pipe makers, Peddars Lane, Beccles 1839 and the same William Copeman, Ingate Road, Beccles 1855. Employee James Calver (b.1821)(S3), listed in census' of 1841 & 1851 as of Peddars Lane, Beccles (S2).
