Full Description

Moat (see Med) with site of Landwade Hall within. `The remains of the old mansion which are within a moated site, in a retired spot surrounded with wood, exhibit the architecture of the early part of the C16 and C17; part of the building has been fitted up for a farm house' (S1)(R1). `The original entrance appears to have been a bridge crossing the middle of the S arm of the moat, but access is now given by a C17 brick bridge with two piers on the W side near the SW corner (see plan). The last house on this site was pulled down between 1850 and 1860. In the centre is a small temple like folly. Entrance is three quarters down W side over a three span brick bridge with stone dressings. Round arches are supported on piers.' (S1)(R2). `Contains a small folly. Painting in Anglesey Abbey shows C16 mansion in SW corner' (S1)(R3).
Summary: Moat with steep sides formerly revetted with Ely brick. The original entrance appears to have been by a bridge crossing the middle of the south arm, but access is now given by a 19th century bridge near the south west corner of the west side (NMR).
Replaced by present Hall to S in 19th century.
Note adjoining earthworks to W and N (EXG 058) and church to SW (EXG 057).
