Monument record STN 061 - Post medieval boundary relating to Downham High Lodge and Lodge Field

Please read our .

Summary

A curvilinear earthwork boundary, identified on the ground and on aerial photographs and lidar imagery, probably corresponds to an enclosure depicted on a late 18th century estate map. This enclosed 'Downham (High) Lodge' and 'Lodge Field'. The earthworks form part of a more extensive group of post medieval boundaries recorded collectively as SHER STN 156.

Full Description

Curving earthwork double (partly?) bank/s, inner circa 60cm high, outer circa 30cm high, with ditches, circa 13m apart, lying outside central banks. Visible from TL 8059 8508 (where unclear in area of wooded hummocks) to 8078 8531 where runs into impenetrable thick woodland (S1). Needs plotting accurately (with GPS?).
Probably part of the line of sub-oval enclosure, shown on Cadogan Estate map of 1791 (S2) enclosing `Downham (High) Lodge' & `Lodge Field'. Further earthworks exist both within and outside this enclosure - see STN 062 & STN 063. For Downham Lodge see STN 064.
Small area of NE corner depicted on OS 1880s map (suggests HER'd alignment slightly incorrect).
For profile and excavated section (in November 2002) across bank and ditch (at 'TL 8106 8516') see STN 068.

November 2017. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
The post medieval curvilinear earthwork boundary described above has been mapped and recorded as part of a larger group of post medieval boundaries SHER STN 156; see that record for details.
