Monument record STN 156 - Post medieval boundaries at High Lodge

Please read our .

Summary

A group of post medieval boundaries is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs and lidar imagery of High Lodge. Several phases of land division are represented; some of the features relate to plantation boundaries, while a curvilinear boundary defines an area enclosing 'Downham (High) Lodge' and 'Lodge Field' on an 18th century estate map. Many of them are depicted on late 19th century Ordnance Survey maps, and several have been recorded previously, either wholly or in part (see SHER STN 060-063, STN 085). Most of the features still survive as earthworks.

Full Description

February 2019. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
A group of post medieval boundaries is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs (S1-S8) and lidar imagery (S9) of High Lodge. Several phases of land division are represented but the features are interlinked and conjoined to such an extent that separating out distinct phases is difficult. Some of the features relate to plantation boundaries, while a curvilinear boundary defines an area enclosing 'Downham (High) Lodge' and 'Lodge Field' on an 18th century estate map (see SHER STN 061). A trench excavated across one of the boundaries recovered a fragment of late Roman pottery from the base of the ditch (SHER STN 088), but this is likely to have been residual. Many of the boundaries are depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch map (S9), and several have been recorded previously, either wholly or in part (see SHER STN 060-063, STN 085). Most of the features still survive as earthworks.
