Full Description
Group of flint mines, mainly in gully and large pit form, in area of mature pine woodland (in process of being thinned in January 1997). Limits appear to be ride between compartments 2058 and 2059 to NW; routeway 4 to SW (may cross some of warren banks WNG 025), although may partially extend across routeway (needs checking); stops well short of former cottage site to W of Elms Plantation site & clearly separate from the `Elms Plantation' flint mines (BRD 067). Limit to SE not determined. Very good preservation. Probably one of areas referred to by Skertchley as "Old pits in and around Elms Plantation.... worked out before Lingheath pits were started and may perhaps have been dug before the gun-flint trade arose" (S2).
According to Rainbird Clarke flint mines "around Elms Plantation" were worked until late C19(?)(S3).
