Full Description
Scatter of patinated and unpatinated worked flints and flint-gritted hand-made pottery first reported in 1995 (see Mes, Neo & IA0, including plano-convex knife (S1).
October 1999: Fieldwalking identified two main flint assemblages (a total of 360 worked flints) and 95, mainly flint-gritted, pot sherds. The earlier, patinated assemblage was dated as LNeo/EBA and included an oblique arrowhead. The later unpatinated assemblage and the pottery seem likely to date to the later BA or EIA. Details in (S2).
2008: 13 further surface found worked flints of Mes & later date (see Mes).
Also Mes, Neo & IA (sf16332/17175 & 17176)
The fieldwalking of a field overlooking the flood plain of the Lee Brook resulted in the recovery of a remarkable prehistoric assemblage. The survey identified 360 worked flints and 95 prehistoric potsherds (mainly Iron Age). This is the largest amount of prehistoric pottery discovered in one fieldwalking episode on any field in Suffolk. The earliest, patinated, flint assemblage can be dated by a simple single barbed (oblique) arrowhead of the Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age. The later, unpatinated, assemblage, of slightly poorer quality, probably dates from between the beginning of the Middle Bronze Age and the end of the Iron Age. Included in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History annual round up of individual finds and discoveries for 1999 (S3,S4).
