Monument record ORF 240 - Keelson of post-medieval wooden sailing ship, Orford Ness

July 1997: Keelson of a wooden sailing ship, oak/elm in poor condition, 8.4m long, probably an C18 or C19 brig or schooner. Keelson section is 40.64cm square and the false keel 25.4cm square. The ends of the keelson have scarf joints indicating a possible overall length of the keel about 30m long. All twelve of the remaining lower buttocks have a similar section of 15.24cm x 20.32cm.
Fastenings are yellow metal pins, 0.8m long, securing the keel, futtocks and keelson. Oak tree nails are evident in some of the futtocks.
The timber has been buried in sediment and teredo worm has affected the exposed part of the timber. Also evidence of sand abrasion (S1). Exact findspot other than 'Orford Ness' or derivation unknown.
