Full Description

Group of clay tobacco pipe stems and bowls (of two designs), kiln waste and soft clay deposited over a former garden topsoil. Probably a dumped deposit (resulting from earlier garden levelling?) from a nearby(?) kiln and production site (S1). The pipes are of an C19 date and several had makers marks 'C' and 'W' or 'M' on the heels. The only Suffolk maker with these initials was Charles Woolnough of Beccles (in 1844) - it is posible he moved to (or from) Sudbury (S2).
Note a smallish building (now gone) is shown just to the north of this deposit on the 1884 & 1904 OS maps. A rapid check of trade directories failed to identify any clay pipe manufacturers. The area was apparently non-titheable and was not shown on the tithe maps of Sudbury.
