Full Description
Circa 1948: Archaeological single trenched excavation (said to be by BM) across steep mound in middle of village in between and where Southwold and London Roads join. Observed by Ruth Thomas when about 8 years old. She believes they were looking for a ship burial but were disappointed and only(?) found some possible Palaeolithic flints(?). The trench was about 8 to 10 feet deep (as remembered). At the time the land was owned by Sir Robert Gouch (S1). No mound appears on the 1994, 1904 (circa) maps or 1957 maps at this location. This could be a confusion with SCU 001, which is in between the Southwold and London Roads & was trenched by Peter Woodard in 1951 (S1)(S2).
Formerly recorded as WRE MISC.
