Full Description

September 2003: Three evaluation trenches on former glebe land revealed a pit and a ditch of unknown date ( including some residual early finds). The site is believed to be that of late Saxon rectory manor which, according to documents housed various manorial buildings, barns, a dairy, brewery, stables as well as orchards, ponds and a moat. No evidence of such activity was found during the trenching, either in the form of features or artefacts. The field's name 'Church Glebe Meadow', may suggest that the site had always been glebe meadow closely controlled by the church who owned the land; the buildings recorded could have occupied a different part of the site, perhaps around the Old Rectory to the west. See documentary research (S1).
