Full Description
Settlement site on a hill top close to a Roman road (Margary 330, ? a branch of the Peddars Way, HTC 017).
1924: Same(?) as site referred to by Copinger-Hill as producing tegulae and imbrices which were `ploughed up last autumn'. He adds `Draining here some years ago brought to light a leaden model of Trajan's column (?date, ? Rom), broken in two unfortunately by the spade, length 12ins. Part of the top and base are missing but the figures are quite distinct..... Close to the roads (2, referred to earlier in the passage), a drain cut into a burial (cremation?), near a "suspicious" hollow. Quantities of broken tile litter the ground. Part of quern was picked up and is to hand. Where the fields reach the low-lying meadows further exploration in dry weather wil be necessary as three are seven queer hollows. An 80ft length of wall or flooring in another field is being examined (March), Roman pottery having been found above it, and the remains of a child's skull and Samian ware' (S7).
1926: Excavations by Rev H Copinger-Hill of Buxhall revealed rectangular flint foundations 51 feet long and at least 15 feet wide, possibly with extending wings. Also middens, pits and an ox burial. Finds comprised iron keys, animal bones, pottery (including samian form 37 stamped ALBVCI and mortaria), glass, floor and roof tiles, denarius of Trajan and `2nd brass' of Maximianus (S1)(R1). Some of the finds now in IPSMG
1972: Site of the building marked by a scatter of tile and flint (S2).
1975/6: Excavations by L J Carter of The Cottage, Fen Lane, Hitcham at (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s), revealed a 'floor' and a possible post hole. Finds comprised pottery (including a samian base stamped SEVERI.M), floor and roof tiles, animal bones, oyster shells and bones (S3). Finds held by(see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s).
1978: Fieldwalking by J Plouviez produced roof and box tiles, pottery (including a samian base and a ? Oxfordshire imitation of a samian form 38 rim)(S4). Finds held by SAU.
`Cist' grave said to have been found in a field nearby (S1). Kiln said to have been destroyed circa 1962, making grey cooking pots(S5). Coins (C4 up to Valentinian and a plated denarius of Hadrian), brooches, including a possibly La Tene II or La Tene III type, fragment nail cleaner, found metal detecting (S6).
1996: Large group of metal detected items, including brooches, 2 seal boxes, bracelet, cosmetic grinder fragment & 41 coins (up to Val.. 364-378). Detail and drawings in (S8).
Also occasional stray Med, PMed & Un items.
