Full Description

1983: Excavation. Finds and Features from Saxon to Post Medieval, (S1-S3)

Middle Saxon, c.700-850
There were no features dating to this period but the site produced 1,368 sherds of Ipswich ware, residual in later features.

Early Late Saxon, c. 850-900
Six pits andone possible posthole and feature, belonged to this period.

Middle Late Saxon, c. 900-1000
Two pits belonged to this period

Late Saxon/Early Medieval, c.850-1100
Almost entirely removed by EMED structure 0005, the base of a kiln was visible in the south edge of the excavation as a surface of clay. The shape of the kiln implies a single flue updraught Thetford ware kiln, presumably of late 9th/10th century date, similar to that excavated on the other side of St Helen’s Street (IAS3601). The site produced 3436 sherds of Thetford ware, mostly residual in later contexts.

Early Medieval, c. 1000-c.1200
Two structures and three pits belonged to this period.

Late Medieval, c.1200-1450
Three north-south ditches, two pits and a pit/tank belonged to this period.

Late Medieval Transitional, c.1450-1600
One linear trench/pit, two rectangular pits and one posthole belonged to this period.

Post Medieval, c.1600-1900
The east end of the excavated area had been heavily disturbed by two features.

Undated
Pit a small area of cobbling, lying over the fill of LMED ditch at the south end of the site, post holes and and small pit contained no dating evidence.
