Monument record IKL 364 - Probable post medieval boundary banks and ditches.

Please read our .

Summary

Sections of bank and ditch, possibly dating to the post medieval period, can be seen as earthworks on visualised lidar data. The features most likely relate to post medieval boundaries including probable parish boundary banks and ditches. In the north of the record there is a number of banks and ditches that may have related to further boundaries, holloways and possible braided trackways. The earthworks run along the supposed course of the Icknield way (IKL 105 and ELV 016) and may relate to further banks and ditches along the course of the Icknield way to the south (IKL 371).

Full Description

This record incorporates features previously recorded under IKL 105 - Icknield Way; Weststow Road (1880s) (Un).

July 2019. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
Sections of bank and ditch, possibly dating to the post medieval period, can be seen as earthworks on visualised lidar data (S1-S3). The features most likely relate to post medieval boundaries including parish boundary banks and ditches. In the north of the record there is a number of banks and ditches that may have related to further boundaries, holloways and possible Medieval-post medieval braided trackways. This area has been mapped by extent due to the high volume of banks and ditches. The earthworks run along the supposed course of the Icknield way (IKL 105 and ELV 016) and may relate to further banks and ditches along the course of the Icknield way to the south (IKL 371). The majority of the banks in the south of the record can be seen as earthworks on the visualised lidar data whilst the banks and ditches in the north of the area can be seen as earthworks in the 1940s before being presumed to be levelled as the features are not visible on recent (2016) aerial photographs (S3). Some of the mapped earthworks are also mapped on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map (S4).
