Full Description

Rom pottery kiln remains and sherds of Rom pottery including rim and shoulder of a face urn similar to LKH 074. Found during digging of a pipe trench on a building site (S1).
Basil Brown visited site on 10 June 1964 and excavated the remains of the kiln which he confirmed was a pedestal kiln of the Wattisfield type. He collected many more sherds of pottery which appeared to come mainly from the stokehole pit. All the sherds were eventually given to Moyses Hall Museum (S2).
Plan of kiln and two newspaper cuttings, one in the archive, and description of excavation amongst June entries in 1964 diary.
1999: Metal detector finds from 'just behind' (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) include Colchester derivative brooch and 17 coins. Details in (S3).
