Monument record IXW 005 - Early Anglo-Saxon cemetery Byways and Riverside Paddocks, Stow Road. (Sax)

Early Anglo-Saxon cemetery, inhumation and cremation.
Finds in 1868 and 1871 may come from this site: a pair of cruciform brooches found on the shoulders of a skeleton in (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) in 1868 (see Misc - CRN 07240) and discoveries in 1871 in (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) of an iron sword with traces of wooden scabbard, spearhead, knife and three shield bosses, two of which retained their handles. "In the same meadow" a bronze disc pin head, gilded, with interlace and animal design in four quadrants similar to Witham example (S1)(R1). This account is confused by attributing the 'Ixworth Cross' finds to the same site as the 1871 finds, whereas Warren clearly states that the gold cross and brooch were found at Stanton in 1856 (S2). Fragments of cremation urns found in the garden of Byways in 1946 by (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) - about 12 urns represented (S4). Fragments of two of these given to Ipswich Museum (per Major G Kilner?) one of which contained human bone and the other stamped with crosses and swastikas. These mis-located by IPSMG to (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) (S5) but correlate with drawings etc. in Basil Brown archive (S4). Another urn fragment at IPSMG is attributed by them to Brown, site 22 at (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s). Also found at Byways were a fragment of shale comb and a rusted metal object (possible brooch ?)(S4).
Metal detected finds from (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) include the foot of a cruciform brooch, a fragment of a gilded square-headed brooch, a possibly burnt brooch wing fragment. Also a lead weight with a gilded bronze relief human head set into it (S7). The head is probably Irish, C8, and resembles the head of crucified Christ on a mount from Hofstad, Norway; it may come from a shrine. The fragment was re-used to decorate a Viking weight in C9 or C10 (S11). There is also a LSax sword from this field (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s)(S7). Area of site corresponds to that marked by Robert Erskine on map as `Saxon urn field' (S10).
Thetford ware pottery sherds found near to lead weight spot after topsoil disturbance (S12).
February 2001: Evaluation trenching prior to proposed development revealed three Early Anglo-Saxon graves (part of larger cemetery), and Neo, Rom & Med finds. Details in (S13).
