Monument record MNL 193 - Large Roman artefact scatter, including flue tile and oyster shells.

Large Rom scatter: finds include flue tile, Nene Valley colourcoat, shell filled ware, oyster shells etc. Cultivated land laid to grass circa 1968, re-ploughed (deep) circa 1977. "Chalk floor" seen. 1962: Sherds of Rom grey ware found in (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) by Colin Pendleton (S2).
2001: Conservation Area (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) pond enlarged revealing large group of Rom pottery and tile (box & roof), possibly from edge of Roman pit (S3).

Evaluation identified a series od boundary ditches and a large pit type feature. Pottery recovered from the features suggests intense activity on the site in the late Roman periods with some of the assemblage exclusive to the late 3rd and 4th centuries. A High proportion were of provincially-traded late specialist wares from the Nene Valley, Oxfordshire, Much Hadham and the East Midlands. Finds collected form the surface during a raided fieldwalking survey of the area included tegulae and box flue tiles indication of a hypocaust in vicinity. Three coins of Circa 4th Century were also found (S4).
