Full Description

A possible Later Prehistoric or Roman trackway is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs, centred on TM 21523662 to the west of Gravel Pit Farm, Chelmondiston. The trackway consists of two parallel ditches roughly 4m apart and is visible running roughly west to east for 320m from Gravel Pit Farm itself. It does not appear to fit into the modern field pattern suggesting that it may be of Later Prehistoric or Roman date. (S1)

Cropmarks visible on further aerial photographs show that the trackway continues to the west to a junction where the trackway changes direction to a roughly north-south orientation. The ditches are visible for a further 162m to the north and 108m to the south, although only one ditche on the south arm is visible. Helen Saunders (Essex County Council), March 2015. (S2)
