Full Description
March 1999: Preh, mainly Late Bronze Age (though radiocarbon radiocarbon date of 2130-1310 BC suggests MBA) site discovered during evaluation trenching. Enclosure ditches, pits/postholes & spreads of charcoal containing pottery & flint found. A well preserevd Iron Age site was identified buried beneath a layer of windblown sand which sealed and protected the site from ravages of subsequent agricultural activity. A system of ditches and spreads of charcoal occupation layers indicate a settlement site. The survival of an ancient buried topsoil, with possible evidence of Iron Age ploughing and occupation surfaces makes this a significant site (S1).
Late Summer and Autumn 1999: The excavation confirmed the presence of a large prehistoric site. Most of the features dated from the Neolithic and Lat Bronze Age/Early Iron Age although a number of post-medieval and modern features relating to the gun flint industry. The majority of the Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age features were sealed by the remnant buried soil layer. The features comprised of a number of phases of enclosure ditches, post-built structures (3 possible roundhouses), and pits. Some of the structures were associated with hearths and activity surfaces. Two unurned cremation burials were also located in the southern part of the site which are likely to be Late Bronze Age but could be earlier (1? radiocarbon dated 2130-1310 BC). A small but distinctive group of Middle/Late Neolithic features associated with Peterborough ware pottery was identified (S2)(S3).
Also (PMed) gunflint waste and features & infant burial (S4).
Included in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History annual round up of individual finds and discoveries for 1999 (S5).
