Full Description

Rom scatter including building at WIX 001. Coins found, including Nero and Constans (1803) in Ensford Field.
Pottery C1-C2, found in rubbish pits (1929, 1936).
Rubbish pits found in N & NE face of gravel pit at (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) (OS 1950). Roof and flue tile, tesserae, window glass and wall plaster found in levelling depression at (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s). Also C1-C2 coins, late C1 brooch, pottery, iron waste (1955).
Area fieldwalked by HDAG 1977 - (finds recorded as WIX 001). Coin hoard, burials & ? Enclosure in Sturmer, Essex, adjacent to site. Bronze frog/toad figurine from Water Hall Farm vicinity (drawing in parish file)(R5).
Metal detected finds 1986-1987: bronze coins C1-C4 (up to Honorius), silver coins C1, C3, C4, brooches Colchester, Colchester derivative, Hod Hill, fragment of animal. Toilet implement (? Nail cleaner) fragment, pin, bracelet.
Further finds 1987 included large coin group (mainly C3-C4), bronze cosmetic palette with animal head, spoons, probe, finger ring, brooches and a denarius of Faustina reworked as a intaglio (S1)(S2).
Cremation group, three pottery vessels, found in side of a modern ditch at (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) during pumping of water (S3). Cremated bone in a grey ware medium-mouthed jar, Samian ware form Dr. 42 as lid and fine grey biconical cups accompanying. Probably early C2 group (S4).
1992-4: Metal detected finds included bronze miniature axe, bracelet fragments, brooches (2,991), coins etc - plotted in gridded areas (S1). N.B. See Arttype for full list of artefacts.
Gold jewellery found while metal detecting in 1999. Details in S5.
2005:Geophysical survey identified linear and discrete anomilies (S6)
2009: Fieldwalking identified a large collection of Roman pottery dating from the 2nd to the 4th centuries and Roman tiles.
2010: Evaluation identified various Roman features (S8).
2011: Excavation identified various Roman features (see WIX 022) (S9).
