Full Description
no1988: substantial scatter of pottery, tile, denarius of Nerva?, bronze coins, found metal detecting in field (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s)(S1).
Rom material on surface, including pottery, tile & coins, in this area previously reported but not seen (S2).
August 1995: Intense concentration of building material, include coarse red tesserae, box & roofing tile fragments noted on E side of field, around (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s)(?). Small sample & pottery (mid C2 & later) collected during initial survey by (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s)(Ely & District Artefact Recovery Club). Metal detected find of sestertius of Alexander Pius (AD 222-235). Farmer also has found (by eye) several coins in very poor condition. Details in (S3).
1995: 18 further coins detected. Details in (S3)(S4).
1996: finds include possible Nar Valley rim sherd.
2006/7?: geophysical survey by Nick Carter of UCL following gridded field walking survey by Mel Birch and members of Suffolk DMS (Suffolk Deserted Medieval Settlements Field Team). Results not seen (S5).
2010: Fieldwalking of a known Roman site in Church Field took place prior to test trenching by the AOC Archaeology Group from London, conforming its location and area of concentration. A small exploratory trench was cut in the grounds of the Old Rectory to ascertain if the Roman occupation extended E and perhaps under the Rectory itself. To the S, in Church Meadow, a small excavation took place to identify the source of a spread of flints and Roman building material. A compact flint ‘yard’ was exposed. Included in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History annual round up of individual finds and discoveries for 2010 (S6). Full report to follow.
2010: Fieldwalking of a known Roman site in Church Field took place prior to test trenching by the AOC Archaeology Group over a 10 metre Gird Pattern. A number of Roman finds including, coins, building material and pottery was recovered (S7).
