Full Description

Rom road on field S of Scole Bridge, running E-W and composed of stones. Basil Brown reports "stones, etc., very hard, took Mr Elliott a day to cut a drain through it." "Rom burial near road consisted of ashes and burnt bones in grey ware urn, a portion of which was kept by the schoolmistress." This site is in the area of an enclosure (see Un) and Brown has marked it on his 6 inch OS map at (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s)(S1).
Metal detected finds include about 200 coins (range Claudian - Valentinian), a pin with head in the form of a hand holding a ?grape, and 18 brooches (S2).
Also Mes, Neo flints, IA coin, Un cropmarks, Sax pin.
Fieldwalking, metal detecting and trial trenches assessment in advance of Scole by-pass. Most occupation evidence along A140 but some subsidiary scatters (S3, S8).
1993-1994: Works in advance of bypass summarised in (S4)(S5). Area 6 identified a leat and brewing complex including a corn drier, a malting oven, barrel lined well and steeping tank. Further features included apits, postholes and and ditches Details to follow.

Also metal detected finds from 2002 including 12 coins, 4 brooches and a vessel.
